Spanish photographer Gabor Erdely came up with a simple idea for capturing some of the life in the beautiful city of Barcelona: photograph a seaside bench for a year. In the Barceloneta area of the city, Erdely faithfully took photos from a bird’s-eye view to capture the many ways the locals use the bench.
The seaside bench (so close that sometimes sea foam brushes up to it from the shore) is the site of many human interactions in the community, whether used for a romantic moment, eating some tapas, or taking an afternoon siesta. As Erdely explains on his website:
“This is a small point of the fisherman’s village lively, vibrant life. [It’s] an integral part of everyday life, of love, of life, of birthdays, of loneliness, of joint activities and of games. This is one of the many thousands of similar sites of community building.”
